Common reactions after a disaster

It is normal to experience a range of emotions during and after a disaster.

Many people recover with support from family, friends and their community. Some people may need extra support.

Know when to seek help

Consider seeking support if:

  • feelings of stress, anxiety or distress continue for several weeks
  • everyday tasks become harder to manage
  • your work, study or relationships are affected
  • you feel overwhelmed or unable to cope
  • family or friends are concerned about you.

Getting help early can make a difference.

Talk to a health professional

Start with your GP.

Your GP can:

  • provide advice and treatment
  • prepare a mental health treatment plan
  • refer you to a psychologist, psychiatrist or other mental health professional.

You can also contact 1300 MH CALL (1300 64 22 55), Queensland's mental health telephone triage service. It can connect you with Queensland public mental health services.
